  1. HORNELL

    ST. PATRICK’S DAY

It began with a half-forgotten promise. Almost two decades later, it has become one of the most popular events in the region– a people’s parade that has grown into an event that cannot be missed.

Early in 1988, Mayor Shawn Hogan vowed that he would bring a St. Patrick’s Day Parade to Hornell– even if he would have to ride a horse down Main Street by himself. Weeks went by and the vow was forgotten by all… except a local radio personality who publicly reminded Mayor Hogan of the promise. True to his word, Mayor Hogan put on jockey togs and rode a white horse to lead a small but enthusiastic parade down Main Street.

    A phenomenon was born.

Each year, the parade has grown larger and more extravagant, even though there are no rules, no structure and no organization. Anyone can take part just by showing up. The only stipulation is that the parade steps off promptly at 11 A.M. Following the parade ( which grows every year) Hornell hosts numerous, ongoing St. Pat’s celebrations citywide.

The parade takes place in all kinds of weather, and has been postponed only once– due to a major snowstorm that left three feet of snow on the ground. Mayor Hogan subsequently vowed the parade never again would be hostage to the weather. Like his original promise, this one too has been kept.

Every year the Mayor rides something different in the parade. He always manages to keep it a secret until the day of the parade. Come out this year to see what he has in store for the community!!!

Celebrations will begin after the parade at Illusions Night Club, The Maple City Bowl and the K of C. Free transportation by bus is offered 1:30pm-1:30am between many local businesses.

Local businesses are already gearing up for this event with Special Promotions throughout the City.
